Trifonic: Synthesis with NI’s Massive – Part 1

Native Instruments’ Massive synth is a great tool for creating nasty, rocking bass and lead sounds.

In this video Brian demonstrates the basics of using Massive’s oscillators, filters, and other features. He also shows how to enhance your Massive sounds using plug-ins like Transformer.

    Inspiring, as always. That bass is so f'n nasty. People rave about Massive, but I've always been a little hesitant since its such a CPU slammer. Of course, omnisphere is probably no better (but has a wider sonic palate).

    Are you hard core about always making your own patches from scratch?

    Thanks! Massive really is excellent, mainly because the layout and user interface are logical, comprehensive and well designed. There isn't much in Massive that you couldn't do in Logic's ES2. The sound quality is equivalent…. but IMHO ES2's interface is more complicated and that can be frustrating sometimes.

    If you put massive in perspective with Omnishpere…. you could buy Komplete 6 (all of NI's product line) for the cost of Omnisphere. From that standpoint Massive as part of Komplete seems like a better value. On the other hand, I've heard nothing but good things about the sounds of Omnisphere so it very well might be worth the cost. If Spectrasonics wants to send me a copy, I'll put that theory to the test :)

    re:sounds from scratch – I'm not overly hardcore about making my own patches from scratch. First and foremost I think about musical context. If someone else made the perfect sound for what I need for a specific musical moment then I would want to use their sound…and not necessarily reverse engineer it. Most of the time other people's sounds don't fit exactly what I need so I've ended up creating many many patches from scratch.

    I think the bottom line is control. If you don't know how to make or control a certain sound, then that is a problem. On the other hand, I have no problem using an amazing preset like “The Abyss” exactly as is from Absynth 1.3. Apparently Massive Attack, Fluke, Hybrid and countless film composers haven't had issues using that preset either ;-)

    yes, just jumped into massive and the first thing i noticed was a jump to 35% cpu usuage just by hitting two keys. but yeah, nastiest bass sounds out there.

    Thanks again for a great post – interesting what you mention about achieving similar results in ES2, I guess you're talking about using the digi waves in there? I've yet to fully explore that synth (and am not about to rush out and buy massive) – so I'm hoping these patching techniques will come in handy for exploring ES2 properly. I agree with you about ES2's interface – but I guess it's like anything, once you understand the signal path any the UI you're up and running… how do Massive's wavetables compare to the digi waves in ES2 in your opinion?

    Yes the digiwaves inES2 can do similar things. You can set a control to sweep through the digiwaves and get a similar Massive style sound. Set Osc1Wave or OscWaves (for all active osc) as the target of the modulation. It takes quite a bit more effort, but you can get very similar style sounds. I think ES2 sounds on par with Massive, but you don't have the same level of flexibility or the intuitive layout. ES2 is very efficient which is definitely a plus, but I don't find that I program many new sounds in ES2 because more often then not it takes me more time to get the result I'm looking for. If you already have Logic, ES2 it is definitely worth exploring!!

    No question, Komplete is a much better value.

    I'm a total spectrasonics devote. Their plug-ins consistently inspire me. I'm constantly running out of memory with Omnisphere though. It'll be a good day when I can move to 64 bit.

    64-bit rocks! No more out of memory errors or memory caused crashes. So far the 32-bit AU bridge in Logic hasn't given me any troubles. Good stuff :)

    as usual great tutorial. you are right massive has perfect interface, its just great to have all features on one page. for other guys i would also recommend Surge by vemberaudio which is kinda similiar to massive , comes with easy to setup interface and you can load your own wavetables…
